Kanye West / Lady GaGa tour canceled
Seattle Gay News is confirming that the "Fame Kills" tour, billed as a headlining show with Kanye West and Lady GaGa, has been canceled by the promoter. All dates for the road outing, which had excluded Seattle (lord knows why!), have been scrapped for no apparent reason...however, I can only assume that the negative publicity surrounding West's bulyish behavior at last month's MTV VMA's had an impact.
Now, West has time to be...very, very quiet. And let's hope Lady GaGa arranges a headlining tour as a result of this!

Bumbershoot 2009: Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, The Cave Singers, and Jason Mraz after-party wrap
I'm moving rather slow this morning, due to Jason Mraz's after-party at The Crocodile last night following his funky, fresh performance on the main stage of the Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival. Read more about Mraz's surprise appearance at the Belltown club at the end of this blog.
The house doors open at noon today for The Black Eyed Peas, who perform at 3pm, following opening act The Knux. If memory serves me correct, this will be Fergie's third appearance at Memorial Stadium.
Are you a LOST fanatic, as in the TV show? Me too. And thousands of Bumbershoot attendees will be cramming into the Leo K. Theatre for a presentation by the writers of this Emmy-winning series. I have absolutely no idea what will be said, but I hope details about the upcoming season are to be slightly revealed. The line will be long for this one, so arrive super early!
From Jimi Hendrix to Death Cab for Cutie, Seattle has produced an impressive list of artists in modern music. Get ready for The Cave Singers, on the verge of joining that list with their sensational blend of folk-tribal sounds like on the single "Dancing on Our Graves". Supposedly, they packed a full house for an in-store appearance last month at Easy Street Records in Queen Anne. The Cave Singers play at 6:45pm on the Fisher Green Stage.
Let's talk about Franz Ferdinand, shall we? Such a terrific band, lots and lots of energy, perky guitars, electro-infused rock, songs about boys crusing other boys on the dance floor, and snappy onstage outfits. The multi-Grammy nominees have interviewed with Seattle Gay News twice, most recently in December 2008 for our year-end music issue - both Alex Kapranos and Paul Thomson sat down with me in the restaurant portion of the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, immediately after sound check for a two-on-one interview (you can find the interview at www.sgn.org, in the archive files for December 19).
Franz Ferdinand can really fire up a crowd, and I expect the pit section at Memorial Stadium to bounce heavily throughout the group's set, which will likely include "Ulysses", "Take Me Out", "This Fire", "Michael", "The Dark of the Matinee", "No You Girls", and "Outsiders". It'll be wild, fun, and sweaty - don't enter the pit unless you can deal with the constant pushing and nudging of unruly concertgoers (by the way, Bumbershoot security is the worst).
Modest Mouse closes out this year's Bumbershoot festivities, taking the stage at Memorial Stadium just 30 minutes after Franz Ferdinand. I've seen the Seattle area-based group several times in concert, and they're capable of putting on a great show - though once, at a "Deck the Hall Ball" gala, they sounded a bit flat and exhausted. Hopefully, they'll be revved up for tonight's performance and will probably introduce music from their new album No One's First, and You're Next. I'm crossing my fingers they do "The World at Large".
House doors open at 6:15pm, and please don't trip me as I dash for a front row spot.
Okay, so about that Jason Mraz after-party. He announced twice during his set last night that his band would be playing a midnight show at The Crocodile, and he wasn't joking. Shortly after midnight, he jumped onstage with group members and friends, like Bushwalla, singing and dancing non-stop until 1:40am. Mraz even came out to the crowd several times to dance with fans, pose for pics, and say hello. He noticed me and said hi - after all these years and the millions of people he's met, he still remembers me by name and face. Mraz also went up to The Crocodile balcony to say hello to fans up there - anyone who thought he would just do one song at the show, then split were wrong...he jammed for another hour and a half, following his set at Bumbershoot. It was soooooo much fun! I'll have more to say about this wild little after-party in my September 11 column in the Seattle Gay News.
No Bumber-Tips today, except to arrive early for Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse!

Bumbershoot 2009: Jason Mraz, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MSTRKFT, Starbucks VIP, and rain
Day 2 of the Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival promises to be...wet.
It's pouring outside and could potentially pour throughout the middle day of Seattle's premiere music event. But, if you think that's going to stop fans of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs from flooding Memorial Stadium, think again. Believe it or not, there are already concertgoers inside the stadium as opening act Cold War Kids (who I met in December backstage at 107.7's "Deck the Hall Ball") go onstage in less than 90 minutes.
The Honey Brothers, featuring Adrian Grenier (of TV's "Entourage") are set to perform at 3:15pm at Mural Amphitheatre. Best place to catch a glimpse of "Vince Chase" is under the trees and on the bark-laid Starbucks VIP area to the left of the stage - it's free, if you purchase a Starbucks card, and you can enjoy complimentary beverages at your leisure!
MSTRKFT is a digital genius, and will begin their workout at Exhibition Hall at 8:30pm, but it means you'll have to skip the performance by singer-songwriter Brett Dennen who plays at 8:45pm at Mural Amphitheatre, or Grammy-nominated R&B artist Raphael Saadiq on the Fisher Green Stage at 9:30pm.
Another performer worth checking out is funnyman Nick Swardson at 2pm inside the Intiman Theatre.
But the biggie on today's lineup is Jason Mraz, who delivers a headlining set at Memorial Stadium starting at 9:15pm. Fresh from a cool-as-beans appearance at the Outlands Music Festival last weekend in San Francisco, Mr. A to Z re-descends to Seattle since performing here last October at the Paramount Theatre.
Mraz likes to mix things up, so don't expect a repeat set list from any of his most recent performances, although look for his Grammy-nominated smash "I'm Yours" to be played towards the conclusion, and a groovier rendition of "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)".
I met briefly with Mraz backstage at the Paramount last fall, and he's in the best shape ever - sticking to a raw food diet and regular sessions of yoga (he even grew a couple of inches!). We love him at Seattle Gay News; he's interviewed with us three times and we always look forward to welcoming this dear friend back to Seattle - so, welcome back Jason!
Not sure if I'l get a chance to say hello to Jason today/tonight because he's on a tight schedule, but we'll see - his peeps know how to get a hold of me, but most importantly they know I'll be there along with thousands of his closest, most faithful gay fans at Memorial Stadium who'll brave out this shitty weather to come see him.
Bumber-Tips:
1 Monorail is the easiest method of getting downtown to/from Seattle Center. Also, look for a Toyota Prius Hybrid tent in front of Westlake Center - they'll shuttle you free of charge just for filling out a quick form. A complimentary ride to Bumbershoot in a new Prius? Loves it!
2 The Starbucks VIP area, which I already mentioned, to the left of the Mural Amphitheatre is an excellent spot to watch a show and sip on fresh-brewed coffee. It's free, just purchase a Starbucks card at your nearest Starbucks location (there's one inside the Seattle Center food pavilion), and you're allowed entry to the VIP area with complimenary beverages and electronic gadget outlets (Blackberry, iMAC, etc.).
3 Take warm clothes, or help support numerous local/regional clothiers by purchasing items for sale at the festival. Also, the Bumbershoot "souvenir" shops have sweatshirts and hoodies in stock.
4 Feet need soothing from a long day? The massage station behind the Fisher Green Stage is a great place to splurge on a 15-minute massage ($19). Yes, it's pricy - but, you're going to spend that money on coffee anyway, which you can get free inside the Starbucks VIP area.
5 Don't miss the "Flexion by Wise Fool New Mexico" peformance at the Rockstage Energy Drink Vert Ramp, north of the International Fountain - these women will astound you, in a show describablly comparable to Cirque du Soleil.

Bumbershoot 2009: Clouds, drizzle, Katy Perry, and Old 97's
In the several years that I've covered Bumbershoot, our city's premiere music event at Seattle Center, I've never awoken to as much cloud coverage as today.
Will it clear up? Will it begin to pour midday? Will the glitter I've evenly sprinkled in my hair be blown away by this late-summer wind? Who knows! But, the show(s) will go on regardless of the weather. Read my Bumber-Tips at the bottom of this blog entry.
Katy Perry goes on stage at 1:45pm this afternoon at Memorial Stadium. If you want to be towards the front, good luck and hurry - the house doors open at noon, and from experience it's a mad dash (a la The Amazing Race) to get up towards the foot of the stage.
Perry opens for The All-American Rejects, fronted by the sexy Tyson Ritter, who kindly posed with my business card backstage at Key Arena a few years ago. They're a hit with younger gay boys, so paired with Katy Perry this concert promises to draw a very mixed crowd.
Matt & Kim and De La Soul are two artists to catch in the evening portion of today's festival lineup, but don't miss the Old 97's at Memorial Stadium (7:45pm) fronted by the totally hot Rhett Miller, who interviewed with me a few years back. They'll play a great, energetic rockabilly set before headliner and multi-Grammy winner Sheryl Crow closes things out for the day.
Bumber-Tips
1 Take Metro, monorail, or a combination of light rail/Metro/monorail to Seattle Center. Parking is a nightmare, so take the #8 bus from Capitol Hill or #'s 1,2,3,4,13 from Downtown to the event area. Or, if you happen to live on Beacon Hill as I do, take light rail to Downtown and transfer to a Metro bus - ditto for those in Columbia City, Mount Baker and Pioneer Square.
2 Withdraw cash before going to Bumbershoot, saving you the hassle of long lines at the ATM machines and ridiculous fees added to your overall transaction. There's a Bank of America just a few blocks away on Mercer, fyi.
3 Take warm clothes, especially with today's gloomy weather. Even if it clears up, the evening tends to bring a light chill after sunset.
4 Eat elsewhere. Unless you want sloppy food, get a re-entry stamp at the North Entrance of the grounds (near the Intiman Theatre) and enjoy a better lunch and/or dinner nearby at the Meccca, Pagliacci, Dick's, Taco del Mar, Kid Valley, Thai Heaven, or several of the other restaurants in close proximity. Also, Metropolitan Market and Safeway are within walking distance for deli-type purchases.
5 Wear comfy sneakers. If you're planning to see mutiple acts at various venues inside Seattle Center, leave the fashionable shoes at home and bring a sensible pair instead - your feet will love you tomorrow.
Have fun at Bumbershoot!!!

The Beatles first trip to Seattle, 45 years ago - Edgewater Hotel hosts tribute
It was 45 years ago when The Beatles made their first-ever appearance in Seattle, performing at the then-Seattle Coliseum and staying overnight at the now-legendary Edgewater Hotel (http://www.edgewaterhotel.com/).
Some of us weren't even born yet when the Fab Four cannon-balled to worldwide fame back in the early 60s, yet ask older family members and they might reveal stories of dancing to "Twist and Shout" on their prom night or jamming to "I Want to Hold Your Hand" en route to the nearest drive-in movie.
The Beatles shared one room at the Edgewater Hotel, located on the Seattle waterfront - suite 272 - and to this day, it draws fans from all over the globe. In fact, a phone call made to hotel management this morning confirms the second floor room is occupied for the night.
For those wanting to celebrate the 45th anniversary of The Beatles visit to the Emerald City, and specifically anyone that might resemble John, Paul, George or Ringo, the Edgewater Hotel is hosting a look-alike contest tonight in their lobby lounge, beginning at 9pm. It's free of charge, but seating is on a first come-first serve basis - so arrive early to be part of the wild fun, and know that 45 years ago on this exact day The Beatles had pleasant dreams - and stuck fishing poles out of their window - at this very spot.

Tonight, Blitzen Trapper who're signed to Seattle-based Sub Pop Records (Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Flight of the Conchords) will perform to a crowd already assembling at the Mural Amphitheatre.
Concert begins at 6pm with an opening act, followed by Portland-based Blitzen Trapper going onstage around 7'sh - you still have time to dart there. In the crowd, Seattle Gay News - of course! Killer rock bands, we're all over it.

Jazz newbie Spencer Day interviews with Seattle Gay News
He's the freshest face of America's most vintage genre, and the opportunity to meet him is a newstand or mouse click away.
Spencer Day, a Utah-born singer-songwriter brought up in rural Arizona by a single mom who still teaches music, is being compared to Michael Buble and Harry Connick Jr. His vocals are smooth and seductive, his arrangements are sophisticated and dreamy, and his looks...well, you can arrive at your opinion.
Day gives his first headlining appearance in Seattle with back-to-back performances at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley (www.jazzalley.com) on July 28 and 29. Visit the venue's website for admission price and show details. This is your chance to see a young star at a very early point in his career, and we should point out that film scripts are already being sent his way. Interesting sidenote: Peter Cincotti gave his first headlining performance at the Jazz Alley.
Pick up a copy of Seattle Gay News at your favorite bar or coffeeshop or visit www.sgn.org and look for "The Music Lounge" column for an interview with Spencer Day. You can also ear-sample his songs at www.spencerday.com.

Tori Amos tour launch tonight, Seattle Gay News is there
This is it, this is the night Tori Amos launches her newest tour in Seattle!
Exactly a week after Green Day opened their 2009 road schedule in the Emerald City, Amos will do the same - but at WaMu Theater, located in the SoDo district next to Qwest Field and across the street from Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners.
Seattle Gay News will be there for Amos' initial date of her anticipated big tour, but first we're heading to Hotel 1000 (1000 1st Avenue) for a pre-show "Tweetup" to mingle with fellow fans. The event runs from 5 to 8pm with special cocktails, starters, and cool giveaways (study up on that Tori Amos bio!).
You can walk to WaMu Theater, or take an inexpensive cab ride over. One Eskimo will open the concert, so Amos isn't expected to go onstage until 8:45pm at the earliest, giving you PLENTY of time for pre-show cocktails - at Hotel 1000, of course!
Look for a full review of the concert in the July 17 issue of Seattle Gay News.

Tori Amos launching tour in Seattle tomorrow, pre-show Tweetup at Hotel 1000
It's Albert from Seattle Gay News, on a bright and sunny afternoon in the Emerald City.
Tomorrow night is the official kickoff of Tori Amos' "Sinful Attraction Tour" at WaMu Theater, located adjacent to Qwest Field in the SoDo district of Seattle (SoDo = South Downtown, next to Pioneer Square).
If you're heading to the concert, stop by Hotel 1000 (www.hotel1000seattle.com) for a special Tori Amos "Tweetup" to enjoy special apps and cocktails en route to the show - in fact, it's about a 10-minute walk to WaMu Theater from Hotel 1000 or an inexpensive cab ride, so it's a perfect spot to mingle with fellow fans and get your drink on before going to the venue. When you arrive at Hotel 1000, pegged by Seattle Gay News as the city's "Best Luxury Hotel", go to "Studio 1000" from the lobby/foyer.
I'm planning to be at both Hotel 1000 and the Tori Amos concert, hope to see you there!

Green Day awesome in first show, Billie Joe kisses male fan on lips
Happy 4th of July, it's Albert Rodriguez from Seattle Gay News slightly recovered from a booming performance by Green Day at Key Arena last night.
It was the start of the rock trio's world tour, and it was a blast - literally! You can't imagine the amount of pyrotechnics in this show - one bang after another, flames everywhere, and a really colorful display of lights mixed with indoor fireworks.
I can't give away too much because a full review of Green Day's concert will be in Friday's issue of Seattle Gay News, and I don't want to spoil any surprises for fans awaiting the punk threesome in their own hometowns - BUT, what I can say is that Billie Joe Armstrong kissed a male fan on the lips. It was hot, entertaining, and lent itself to the spontaneity of a Green Day performance. The fan was pulled onstage to sing along with the group, and immediately went for Billie Joe's mouth - and Seattleites being the very open-minded, laid back folks that they are just cheered, laughed, and hooted.
I can also share with you that the Bay Area unit is playing music representing their entire catalog - so you'll not only hear songs from the new album, 21st Century Breakdown, but also selections from American Idiot, Dookie, and Nimrod.
My favorite part of the show was when Green Day did "21 Guns", which I think is the best cut from the newest CD - in concert, the piano at the end was brilliant and Billie Joe's vocals were absolutely stunning on it.
The crowd was restless, especially on some of the band's well-known hits. The main floor was jam-packed, and they just kept bouncing up and down throughout. I've been in a Green Day pit twice during the American Idiot tour, even suffered bruised ribs on both occasions, so I was pretty stoked to have an actual seat this time around in the section just to the left of the stage.
I have no rants about last night's concert whatsoever, but I was hoping for an image switcheroo from Green Day - maybe a mohawk, a change of attire, something. But, it was as if they walked from the American Idiot tour to this one without even looking in a mirror - they not only look the same, they pretty much wear the identical clothes from their previous road outing. I really was hoping to see Billie Joe in a pair of super skinny purple Levi's instead of his usual choice, the somewhat roomy black ones.
Anyway, overall it was a killer show and if they're coming to your city I suggest definitely checking them out. They play for a solid two hours, and then some, and it's high energy all the way, plus a really good set list. Also, bring a pair of ear plugs if you don't like the sound of loud bangs because there are plenty of them during the whole performance.
Bottom line: I was very entertained last night, and glad to see that Green Day brought their A game to the start of their new tour in Seattle!

Green Day launching world tour in Seattle tonight, Seattle Gay News is there
Hey, it's Albert from Seattle Gay News on a very hot afternoon in Seattle. Watching an intense battle o' the Andy's (Roddick vs. Murray, Wimbledon). I'm cheering for both, as one is American and the other is tall, sexy, and has a British accent (and, thank you Andy Murray for wearing tight shorts).
More importantly, today is GREEN DAY. I'm impatiently awaiting my ticket to be delivered via UPS from the record label - as soon as it's here, I'm jetting to Seattle Center to take advantage of the clear blue skies and Seattle International Beer Festival.
I know nothing about tonight's show, as the label and tour promoter have kept mum on details - all I've been told is that Green Day chose to rehearse for it in California leading up to the moment they headed to Seattle. But, tonight's performance marks the world tour launch of Green Day's newest live production. I'm hoping and expecting to be wowed, especially after seeing the dazzling American Idiot concert twice at two separate venues.
Scattered tickets remain for the concert this evening, and it appears you can still purchase them online at Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com). Though, at a certain point very soon all remaining tickets will be transferred and available only at the venue.
If you're heading to Seattle Center, the massive complex housing Key Arena, Space Needle, Experience Music Project, as well as several other performance halls, take note that the popular Beer Festival is also taking place on the grounds right now. Add to this: the many tourists zipping up the Space Needle or sundrenched locals cooling off at the International Fountain.
So, my best recommendation is to take Metro or a combination of Metro/Monorail to the show. From downtown, take the #1, #2, #4 or #13 to Seattle Center, or from Capitol Hill take the #8 (on John Street). The monorail is a quicker trip to/from downtown, and you board it at the top level of Westlake Center (3rd and Pine) - it will drop you off inside Seattle Center. If you must drive, parking is limited. If you arrive early and don't wanna get your drink on right away, then make a pit stop at Easy Street Records (on Mercer).
I'll have a brief wrap-up of the concert here tomorrow morning, and a full review of the band's performance in next week's issue (July 10) in the Seattle Gay News.
Besides the gorgeous holiday weekend in Seattle, let's also celebrate the return of GREEN DAY!

Seattle Gay News attending Green Day's tour launch on Friday
Grammy-winning rock trio Green Day chose Seattle as the starting point for its newest tour, set to perform Friday night at Key Arena.
Seattle Gay News will be among those in the audience, listening to live versions of the band's fresh material from 2009's highly-praised 21st Century Breakdown, as well as songs from previous releases. The album, certified gold (500,000 copies sold) by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), has sprouted two hit singles already, "Know Your Enemy" and "21 Guns" (SGN's Top Ten Recordings, 2009 1/2).
We'll be at Key Arena on Friday to catch Billie Joe, Mike and Tre in action as they launch their big tour, circling North America and possibly extending overseas in the months ahead. Look for a mini review of the concert at this blog site on Saturday morning, with a full review in the July 10 issue of Seattle Gay News. Also, we'll update you on the traffic situation getting to Seattle Center on Friday afternoon, as the grounds will be packed to host both the Green Day concert and Seattle International Beerfest.
Green Day + Seattle = It's on!

Judge weighs gay employees privacy issue
Seattle City Light employee Philip Irvin wants the names of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) city employees who are members of a city-sponsored club working on issues of concern to their community.
The City of Seattle concedes that they may have to release the names. Members of the LGBT club have sued to keep their names from being disclosed. They claim there is no legitimate public interest to granting Irvin's request and will infringe on people's privacy.
Irvin claims to have been discriminated against because of his conservative anti-LGBT views. He once attempted to form a city-sponsored group for "ex-Gays."
A city light veteran, who is heterosexual and spoke on the condition of anonymity, told this writer that it is not a matter of discrimination but honoring a city ordinance and internal employee policy that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation among other protected groups. Irvin's actions are contrary to this ordinance and policy which puts him at odds with his co-workers.
King County Superior Court Judge John Erlick could decide the case on Thursday.

SGN on the floor at tonight's Coldplay/Snow Patrol concert
It's Albert from Seattle Gay News, in Vancouver BC for tonight's Coldplay concert with opening act Snow Patrol at GM Place.
The first of back-to-back performances took place last night, and I'm told by a father and teenage son - who are staying at my hotel (L'Hermitage Hotel, fab place to stay in Vancouver!) and went to the gig - that it's an early show - supposedly, Snow Patrol goes onstage around 7:30 or 7:45, then Coldplay jumps on at 8:15 or 8:30. Last night's concert was also being taped, as part of an upcoming Coldplay DVD special or release - not sure if tonight's show will be taped as well.
I'm told there are two excellent places to pre-funk before any concert in Vancouver, the Granville Room (957 Granville Street) and Chambar (562 Beatty Street) - so I'm hitting both on my way to the concert.
Coldplay is one of the world's most popular bands, and photos of the show were available on the Vancouver Sun's website just minutes after their performance last night. The Grammy-winning rock band is currently still touring their top-selling album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Meanwhile, Snow Patrol has kept low-key since its third US release, A Thousand Million Suns, and has ignored the West Coast almost entirely on their 2008 and 2009 tour itineraries.
I've got a floor seat for tonight's big show at GM Place - so I'm very excited. Look for a review of Coldplay and Snow Patrol's performances in the June 26 issue of Seattle Gay News!

Seattle Gay News heads to Coldplay/Snow Patrol concert in Canada
Hey, it's Albert at Seattle Gay News on a drizzly late morning in the Emerald City (after a month of no rain, it's a nice change).
I'm heading to Vancouver BC tomorrow to catch one of Coldplay's back-to-back shows at GM Place, with fellow UK rockers Snow Patrol slated as the opening act.
Safe travels if you're also headed up north this weekend. Tomorrow's outbound train to Vancouver is completely sold out, but there are Amtrak charter bus spots available. Check the "rideshare" on Craigslist for last-minute carpool opps.
If you're looking for a hotel to crash at, and not on a tight budget, I recommend Opus, Loden, Pacific Palisades, Listel, or L'hermitage. Again, these aren't budget hotels but some of them are offering great summer and/or economy-strapped specials. Tell them Seattle Gay News sent you.
I'm pre-funking at the Granville Room and Chambar right before Sunday night's performance - both are cool places to hang before or after a show.
Look for a review of Coldplay and Snow Patrol in the June 26 issue of Seattle Gay News.

Seattle Gay News attending the B-52's show
It's Albert at Seattle Gay News, excited about this evening's performance by the B-52's at Woodland Park Zoo.
The concert will take place, rain or shine - and I expect the overcast clouds to clear by this afternoon, often the case in June here in Seattle. The show is sold out, so you'll have to find any loose tickets on your own.
I'm told the B-52's will hop on stage at 6:50pm, and because of the Phinney neighborhood's noise ordinance, the concert needs to be completed by 9pm. Line-up to get into the show begins at 4pm, opening act is the 88's.
If you haven't yet been to a show at the Zoo, I recommend the following:
1 Ride the bus. Parking is limited and because the Zoo is in a residential area, post-concert traffic will be a mess. Take the #5 bus from downtown Seattle instead. You can also walk to the East side of the Zoo and catch the #358 on Aurora Ave./Int. 99.
2 Bring your own food. You're not allowed to bring alcohol into the grounds, but outside food is permitted - and with the long waits and only a few vendors, I suggest stopping at a grocery store or your favorite take-out place and bringing it in with you.
3 Warm clothes and blanket. Because the concert area is surrounded by giant trees and sunken deep into the Zoo grounds, the temperature will drop significantly no matter how hot it gets today. Come prepared with adequate clothing and a blanket, if you plan to sit on the lawn.
4 Can we dance? I hope so, though I've never been to a pop concert at the Zoo - only folk or singer-songwriter performances. It's possible that in order to not obstruct the view of anyone, those near the front of the stage will have to find an alternate location (side of stage?) to shake their groove thing. My recommendation if you wanna dance: get there early and stake a spot as close to the stage as possible to give yourself maximum options.
5 Is beer and wine available for purchase? Yes, bring cash in the event cards are not accepted.
See you at the show tonight!

Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black xxx-posed
Dustin Lance Black, who gave an emotional acceptance speech at this year's Academy Awards ceremony, is the latest Hollywood celebrity figure to be xxx-posed in a pec-torial spread.
The openly Gay screenwriter of Milk is now an Internet sensation for his other work, starring in a private sex tape with an unknown male. Queen-y gossip guru Perez Hilton broke the news on his popular website with edited and non-edited pics of Black in action - you can view them at your discretion at http://perezhilton.com/2009-06-12-oscar-winner-dustin-lance-black-exxxposed
I can honestly say now that I love everything about Dustin Lance Black.

Rufus Wainwright to play Benaroya Hall
This just in: Seattle Gay News has learned that Rufus Wainwright will perform November 8 at Benaroya Hall, home of the famed Seattle Symphony. It's an excellent venue in downtown Seattle with some of the best acoustics of any modern concert hall in the country.
The Grammy-nominated artist has interviewed twice with us before, and we'll try to snag him for a third chitchat closer to show date - by then, we'll return to sipping hot coffee rather than iced.

California high court upholds Prop 8
The Califonia Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, which amended the state consitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.
However, the court said the marriages of approximetly 18,000 same-sex couples shall remain valid.
Proponents of equal marriage rights will rally at 5:30 PM at Westlake to protest the decision.
...[W]e conclude that each of the state constitutional challenges to Proposition 8 advanced by petitioners and the Attorney General lacks merit. Having been approved by a majority of the voters at the November 4, 2008 election, the initiative measure lawfully amends the California Constitution to include the new provision as article I, section 7.5.
However, the court said the marriages of approximetly 18,000 same-sex couples shall remain valid.
Applying well-established legal principles pertinent to the question whether a constitutional provision should be interpreted to apply prospectively or retroactively, we conclude that the new section cannot properly be interpreted to apply retroactively. Accordingly, the marriages of same-sex couples performed prior to the effective date of Proposition 8 remain valid and must continue to be recognized in this state.
Proponents of equal marriage rights will rally at 5:30 PM at Westlake to protest the decision.

Record Store Day - support independent music stores
Hi, it's Albert Rodriguez at Seattle Gay News on a beautiful spring morning (just watched a fab Kathy Griffin special on Bravo).
Today is national Record Store Day, when we show our support to independent record stores like Easy Street Records, Sonic Boom, Silver Platters and Cellophane Square - or whatever is in your neck of the woods. It's not that we don't like the corporates, it's just that we want the small retail stores to survive along with the big ones.
If there's a CD or music item you've been waiting to buy, please purchase it today at one of the above listed stores. There are some really great new releases by Neko Case, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Silversun Pickups - or maybe an authentic Seattle record shop T-shirt for out of town friends.
At Easy Street Records today, local rock group the Moondoggies (pictured) will perform at the Queen Anne location at 5pm.
Show your support of independent record stores today, April 18!

City files suit against Pride organizers
The Seattle Gay News first broke the news that Seattle Out and Proud, organizers of the downtown Gay pride parade, still owed the City of Seattle for its use of the Seattle Center for post-parade festival in 2006.
Now, the city has filed a lawsuit in King County Superior Court on Monday seeking repayment, interest and attorney's fees. The total sought thus far is approximately $125,000 but could rise as the city incurs additional legal expenses.
The Stranger reports that SOaP made 13 payments totaling $10,200 and that the organization tried to negotiate a workable payment plan with the city for the last two and a half years.
The post-parade pride festival at the Seattle Center is now run by a private company.

Haggard appologizes to gays
In a matter of a couple days in 2006 Ted Haggard went from being the founder and pastor of Colorado’s New Life Church and president of the Association for Evangelicals – a man with a hotline to the President of the United States – to the biggest pariah on both sides of the gay equality question.
Haggard’s community of evangelicals – his whole world – dropped him faster than a lead balloon. A common tactic when one of their so called “ex-gays” comes to their senses regarding their own homosexuality or bisexuality. So much for love the sinner, hate the sin!
The gay community wasn’t very keen on picking him up either because while his evangelical buddies were claiming gays were responsible for everything from the decline of heterosexual marriage and, even, Hurricane Katrina, Haggard sat back smugly and said nothing. In addition, he condemned homosexuality at the same time he was hooking up with a male prostitute and seeking methamphetamine.
As a caring compassionate human being, I don’t like to watch people implode. However, I must admit to experiencing some mild pleasure from the events that transpired that November of 2006. Hypocrisy was on display for the world to see and was a reminder for any others who sought to live their life under a similar cloak.
Now, Haggard’s talking publicly about his big secret and answering new allegations that he took advantage of a young church volunteer who was questioning his sexuality. I don’t question his intentions, although many do.
I watched his appearances today on CNN’s Larry King and ABC programs Nightline and World News on Wednesday. In each he apologizes to the gay community. He basically says that he thinks being gay is a sin “for me” and that he doesn’t think being gay is any more a sin than other sins. His wife Gail told Larry King that if they had a gay child they would talk it through.
Until Haggard comes the realization that being gay or “mostly straight with complications” is not only NOT a sin, but a blessing from the creator, than he is not truly free to be who God intended. Furthermore, I refuse to accept his apology until it comes without conditions.
I couldn’t care less if Haggard chooses to remain in his marriage. I think he’s on the right track by cutting back on the lies he once told to himself about his feelings. I am concerned that he may have surrounded himself by spiritual advisors and counselors who adhere to the view that homosexuality can be cured or is a disease like Alcoholism which only abstinence can cure.
In 2005, I attended the Focus on the Family “Love Won Out” conference at the Northshore Baptist Church in Bothell aimed at helping gays to leave their “lifestyle.” The speakers talked about parental attachment disorders and the power of God to heal one’s “sexual brokenness.” All I saw was a lot of scared kids being misled by unqualified and discredited “counselors” who knew more about fundraising than the practice of counseling. Everyone was hawking a book, a self-help system or retreat/treatment center.
The truth is that life is only worth living when we have the ability to just be who we are, who God intended us to be. So my advice to Haggard and anyone wrestling with their sexuality is to lose the cloak, forget the money-grubbing “ex-gay” folks, and hire yourself some real spiritual advisors who will help you get closer to God and a licensed therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist who will help you understand yourself.
If you haven't heard enough from Haggard, he is the focus of a new HBO documentary that airs this month titled, "The Trials of Ted Haggard." If you've seen it, let us know what you think?
